17u Showcase fall in finals of Moosic Mets Labor Day Classic

The 17u NJ Marlins Showcase team rallied in the final 2 innings of the Moosic Mets Labor Classic in Scranton, Pa. but fell short in the Championship Game 5-4.   Falling behind in the first 2 innings 5-0, the Marlins had an up hill battle chipping away throughout the game.  Paul Schifilliti pitched 5 strong innings giving up 4 unearned runs on 4 hits.  Jeremiah Muhammad pitched the 6th and 7th innings striking all 6 batters he faced.  Muhamad’s fastball was consistently in the low 90’s topping out at 93mph.  Luke Bonfield was the leading hitter for the Marlins going 2-3 with 2 RBI’s.  Also swinging well was Nick Pedalino, Andrew DiPiazza and Joey DeLaCruz 2-2 with a walk.

In the Semi-Final game, the Marlins held on for a 7-6 victory.  Leading 5-1 with 2 outs in the 5th inning, Marlins starter Nick Pedalino ran out of gas.  A couple of hits and defensive mistakes helped the opponent tie the score at 5.  In the top of the 6th, the Marlins responded with 2 big runs to go up 7-5.  Lead offensively throughout the game by Mike Miraglia, Rick Hopkins, Jeremiah Muhammad, Mike Elfreth and Nick Pedalino.  In the top of the 6th, Miraglia hit a triple scoring Matt Graziano from first.  Miraglia then scored on a wild pitch to put the Marlins up by 2 runs.  Luke Bonfield pitched the 6th and 7th innings to get the save.  He left runners on 2nd and3rd in the bottom of the 7th to secure the victory and move the team into the finals.

Getting into the playoffs, the Marlins had to win game 4 of pool play against a very good All Star Baseball Academy team.  The Marlins lead 4-3 going into the top of the 7th. bringing in Jeremiah Muhammad to close out the game.  Muhammad had control problems from the start of the inning.  ASBA took a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.  Matt Graziano lead off the inning by getting hit with a pitch, then was followed by a triple from Nick Pedalino to make it 10-6.  The hits just kept on coming, a single by Paul Schifilliti, a double by Rick Hopkins, a walk to Matt McCann, single by Mike Elfreth and a walk off triple by Luke Bonfield.  The Marlins scored 6 runs without a batter making an out.  What a great comeback and game.  Andrew DiPiazza pitched 6 solid innings for the Marlin.
